Yahoo! is unceremoniously closing GeoCities, one of the original web-hosting services acquired by Yahoo! in 1999 for $2.87 billion. Continue reading →

http://geocities.yahoo.com/

So sad, but Geocities is set to close their doors at the end of this year. If you were a early website designer pioneer www.geocities.com was the grandaddy for placing you on the www map. I had several sites on their from my early years in college and its so sad to see another site die off from those years. Yahoo bought them out in the late 90s but it never seemed the same after the merger took place.

Apparently according to their FAQ (http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/geocities/geocities-05.html) they are sending instructions for all current users in the summer on how to back up their data. And also according to Yahoo:

After careful consideration, Yahoo! has decided to close GeoCities later this year. You can continue enjoying your GeoCities service until then — we just wanted you to let you know about the closure as soon as possible. We’ll share more details this summer. For now, please visit the help center for more information.

Well here is another RIP to a web pioneer. Thanks for the Memories
